Over 6 million Retinal Images on Digital Healthcare systems

Cambridge, UK: 15th December 2008 - November saw record numbers of diabetic patients screened for retinopathy through the 39 regional Diabetic Retinal Screening Schemes that use Digital Healthcare"s OptoMize software product to manage the screening process.

Diabetics are at high risk for vision loss or blindness due to diabetic retinopathy, a condition in which bleeding inside the eye causes retinal damage.

In the UK, the National Screening Programme looks to screen all diabetic patients annually to detect early and previously undiagnosed signs of diabetic retinopathy and other causes of blindness. In November, through schemes that use OptoMize, over 65,000 patients were screened and over 250,000 retinal images were captured.

Since the first Diabetic Retinal Screening Programme went live using OptoMize software in 2005 Digital Healthcare calculate that over 6 million retinal images have been taken.

Kevin McDonnell, General Manager at Digital Healthcare, commented "Seeing record numbers of patients screened for previously undetected signs of eye disease is proof positive of the effectiveness of the National Screening Programme. We are delighted that our products are playing such an active role."
